I was surprised when I became the first male Alaska Native physician. “Wow, that was a surprise.” Because I figured there was plenty more before me. There’s no role models—very few. And, also, it’s hard to compete with the oil patch when kids are graduating from high school and making fifty bucks an hour doing something. So why go to school?
