Traditional healing practices were used at Kalaupapa due to lack of access to physicians

[Aluli:]
Down in Kalaupapa, I mean it’s amazing, because for all the other illnesses they maintain the traditional practices. They maintained it because they didn’t have access to a physician all the time.
[Lindberg:]
Well, let me understand it though. In the case of leprosy the traditional healing wasn’t brought to bear?
[Aluli:]
No.
[Lindberg:]
That’s my impression just after reading books. Yeah, so it left that field open to Father Damien.
[Aluli:]
And a whole different prayer.
[Lindberg:]
Right.
