Developing culturally relevant substance abuse treatment

[Dickerson:]
In my research project we – it's a developmental project to fully develop and pilot or pretest a drumming intervention for American Indians and Alaska Natives with substance abuse problems.
[Lindberg:]
Somebody must say to you, 'Well, I don't know a darn thing about drumming.'
[Dickerson:]
Yes, and we would expect that with American Indians and Alaska Natives especially in the urban centers -
[Lindberg:]
So do you give them sticks or you tell them to pound on the thing?
[Dickerson:]
Right. Yeah, we actually have a grant developed and a program developed where you make your own drum and learn from our cultural leaders on what the materials represent what the purpose of the drum is, and we kind of introduce them that way.
