Sweat lodge ceremonies can be effective treatment for PTSD

[Bullock:]
One example of a ceremony that is in a sense genius trauma treatment that has been around a long time is the sweat lodge, which is ? many tribes have either had it traditionally or adopted and you think about going into a small, closed environment which could set off some trauma symptoms ? but you're raising the heat which, you know, raises some stress hormones, but in a more positive context, and the people stay present with that as they pray and sing and pass the pipe. That actually has a desensitization quality to it, and certainly many many veterans have found the sweat lodge to be helpful.
